In today's digital age, possessing digital literacy is pivotal for fostering skilled and competitive individuals, particularly amongst the youth. This is precisely why Jakarta Smart City teamed up with the Language Development and Enrichment Agency under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kementerian Pendidikan, Kebudayaan, Riset, dan Teknologi/Kemendikbudristek) for the Abdi Bahasa Kepulauan Seribu initiative. Intrigued by how much fun it was? Keep reading to find out!

Digital literacy is the ability to thrive through digital technologies, such as Internet platforms, social media, and mobile devices. On 14–16 August 2023, Jakarta Smart City was thrilled to educate students of SMKN 61 Jakarta and the youths of Tidung Island, Kepulauan Seribu about digital literacy. It was a part of Kemendikbud’s program called Abdi Bahasa Kepulauan Seribu. The speakers focused on tutoring in the making of social media content.

Abdi Bahasa Kepulauan Seribu was opened by Hj. Hafsah S.K.M., M.M. as the Head of Tidung Island Village. She hoped that by joining this event, the participants could increase their digital literacy skills. She also thought that it was important as there are many hoaxes on social media.

It was explained that Tidung Island has its own local wisdom: sukun chips, cue crackers, fish crackers, cocoa sukun sticks, seaweed dodol, odol skewers, and celorot. All of them need to be preserved.

All the local wisdom on Tidung Island is a reflection of the local identity and cultural heritage. That is why the next generation must preserve it. After hearing the opening from Mrs Hafsah, the speakers from Jakarta Smart City were ready to deliver the material to all participants.

Learning About Digital Literacy with JSC

There were several experts from Jakarta Smart City involved in Abdi Bahasa Kepulauan Seribu. With the expertise they possess, they successfully delivered the prepared lessons. I also had the opportunity to speak with them and hear their excitement. Curious about their experiences? Read below!

Safina Zora Hassanah

Safina Zora Hassanah as an employee of Jakarta Smart City was present as a speaker. She got to teach the participants about Photo/Poster Content Design Techniques. That day, she elaborated on the basis and principles of content designing: balance, contrast levels of differences in visual hierarchy, unity, pattern repetition, layout direction of motion, proportion, harmony, and variation.

Safina’s explanation raised a question from one of the participants, Saqila. She asked, “Why do we have to apply these principles when creating content?” Safina then explained, “It is done so we can  produce a good design. That way also will avoid bias from people who see the picture. If you want the audience to see the content easily, then you should apply that.” In addition, Safina also recommended using Canva and Adobe Illustrator for designing photo or poster content.

After participating at this event, Safina hopes that the younger generation can utilise digital technology and develop their talents. She felt that the Wi-Fi network there weakened when used simultaneously. However, this did not diminish the participants' enthusiasm. They were enthusiastic and critical about the lessons presented. Finally, she also hopes that all participants can excel in creating content, have a sense of artistry, and define their target market better.

Naura Nady Salsabila

Naura Nady Salsabila was the next Jakarta Smart City expert who got to step forward. She got to explain about social media copywriting. It was stated that copywriting is the art in selling or marketing things. When copywriting, you should be aware about the objectives, target, unique selling point (USP), and branding identity. Those are the things that will make your audience get persuaded by your content.

Dian then had a question in response to Naura’s presentation. She wanted to know how to make your content go viral. Naura shared the secret to that: you have to be diligent in creating content. Social media audience will then recognise the consistency of your account creation. Following trends going around is also key. But, you still have to make a difference in your content compared to other social media accounts.

Naura was thrilled to participate at this event as a speaker. She felt that the participants were enthusiastic whilst learning the material, despite their daily school studies focusing on marine topics. One of the 10th grade students admitted that she enjoys playing chess and asked Naura to evaluate the content she created. It was clear that the material presented is suitable for their generation, especially if they aspire to work in this field.

Naura viewed this event as a new challenge and saw it as a platform for sharing her knowledge. She happily introduced terms related to social media, such as “engagement”. “I was excited about it because until now, I've only been doing work tasks; there hasn't been an opportunity to share knowledge with others,” she admitted. Naura hopes that this activity will continue in the coming years, considering that many are still not well-versed in digital literacy. For her, this is a chance to learn things beyond the school curriculum.

Orizon Astonia

Confused about how to handle your social media content effectively? Well, fear not! The upcoming expert from Jakarta Smart City, Orizon Astonia, is here to spill the beans. He breaks down the art of using social media into a science, highlighting the importance of diverse and adaptable content. Plus, don't forget the magic touch of images and hashtags.

If you're looking to levelling up your social media game and appearing more professional, there's a golden rule: meticulous planning and constant evaluation. It's the secret sauce to mastering the realm of social media.

During that session, Rica was curious about the positive and negative effects of social media. Orizon then responded that it is powerful enough to make ordinary individuals famous. But, the negative effect is that you could get into trouble if you share too much private information. This is why we should learn to be wise using social media.

Orizon enjoyed his responsibility as a speaker. He presented the material comprehensively, so that the participants understood the most basic things. For example, he explained that we need to pay attention to the light elements in video content. In addition, there is a balance that must be taken into account when creating a poster. "We provided education that making posters isn't just putting text over pictures," he admitted. He also hopes that digital literacy education can continue to be delivered optimally in Indonesian regions as education equality.

Opportunity to Create Something

The speakers not only delivered materials, but they also served as judges for the posters and creative video competition. Participants have the chance to take part, and three fortunate individuals will each receive a cash prize of Rp1,000,000. How exciting!

The future of digital literacy obviously lies in the hands of the younger generation. Everyone has the opportunity to be a part of the change. Keep sharing your digital knowledge and skills to inspire each other! Jakarta Smart City will always be delighted to share knowledge for those in need.
