The Kota Tua (Old Town) Tourism Area in Jakarta is a popular tourist destination for Indonesians, which is now declared as a Low Emission Zone (LEZ). LEZ are defined areas where access by some polluting vehicles is restricted in order to improve air quality in the area. Jakarta is following the steps of various cities in the world that have implemented LEZ to keep the air clean in various regions. On February 8, 2021, LEZ was implemented on open and close base first. Even so, its implementation has been in effect for 24 hours. The LEZ is implemented in Jl. Pintu Besar Utara - Jl. Kalibesar Barat South side - Jl. South side of Kunir - Jl. Kemukus - Jl. Ketumbar - Jl. Lada.

The arrangement of the Kota Tua Tourism Area is based on Government Regulation Number 32 of 2011 concerning Management and Engineering, Impact Analysis, and Traffic Need Management, and Governor Regulation Number 36 of 2014 concerning the Old Town Area Master Plan.

Pedestrians, Cyclists, Public Transportation, and Certain Vehicles Are Allowed to Pass

To maintain a low emission zone from pollution, vehicles can not carelessly pass the Kota Tua area, Jakarta. Only pedestrians, cyclists, public transportation and vehicles with special low emission stickers are allowed to pass.

This is to achieve LEZ goals which are not only to improve air quality and environmental cleanliness, but also to preserve the cultural heritage in Kota Tua as an object of revitalization of tourism areas.

The implementation of LEZ is a big commitment from the Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta to continue to reduce emissions in Jakarta by up to 26% in line with central government policies.

How LEZ Could Change The Face of Kota Tua

The existence of a Low Emission Zone in Kota Tua Jakarta will certainly have a good influence on development around the Kota Tua area. This is to make pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users comfortable doing activities in Kota Tua, adequate infrastructure is needed. Therefore, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has also arranged the Jakarta Kota Station area and built Jakarta MRT lines and stations, as well as pedestrian plazas.

With a better arrangement of the area, the public will certainly be more interested in traveling in the Old Town area. Visitors do not need to worry anymore about air quality when visiting, because of the LEZ. cultural heritage is protected, and the visitors are safe from pollution.
