WSIS Prizes 2021: Jakarta’s Innovations in The World Stage

Two innovations from Jakarta has been nominated in world class competition.  This is a happy news for the citizens of Jakarta in particular, as well as Indonesian citizens in general, since Jakarta represents Indonesia to compete with other nominations from various countries. The award event is the WSIS Prizes 2021. WSIS is a forum that supports sustainable development or Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), by encouraging the development of information and communication technology (ICT). This forum is organized annually by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). This year, Jakarta has entered two nominations, which are JakWifi in the C2 AL category, Information and Communication Infrastructure and JAKI (Jakarta Kini) in the C7 AL category, E-Government. 

Nominees for Best ICT Infrastructure Solution

To have advanced information and technology, the world needs adequate infrastructure. The importance of this has made WSIS give awards to various countries that develop good technology and information infrastructure. 

JakWifi, Internet for Everyone, Indonesia

When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, many learning activities and work were carried out online. This encourages the DKI Jakarta Provincial government to improve internet infrastructure in Jakarta so that citizens can easily access the internet. JakWifi has been chosen as one of the nominees in this category, because JakWifi provides comprehensive internet access in many public places in Jakarta. Not only that, the WiFi provided is also free of charge. With this, Jakartan can save on their personal expenses, which can be used for their other essential needs. Since its launch until March 2021, the total number of JakWifi users in Jakarta has reached 20,747. Now, students who go to school online can learn remotely and residents can also use the internet for their work, business, or other productive activities in Jakarta.

In category AL C2. Information and Communication Infrastructure, JakWifi competes with various representatives from other countries, such as the following:

"AFAQ" Initiative, Oman

AFAQ was launched by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) in the Sultanate of Oman to provide internet services to remote villages in Oman. The AFAQ Initiative now covers 598 remote villages including 141 public schools which not previously not connected to the internet, as well as 5 agricultural locations.

Government meets, Sri Lanka

In the midst of Covid-19, the Sri Lankan government must adapt and continue to carry out its duties to serve its citizens while maintaining a physical distance. Sri Lanka then shifted moved the meeting between government elements to virtual platform via meet.gov.lk and minimized the spread of the Covid-19 disease.

Hellas Sat and Africom Holdings, Zimbabwe 

Hellas Sat provides unlimited and free internet connectivity to 127 public clinics and hospitals in Zimbabwe. Deployment was carried out by Africom Holdings which revived connectivity to existing infrastructure that was originally established in 2016 at various clinics and hospitals. 


 

Nominees for Best E-Government Solution 

Indonesia also competes with various innovations from around the world in the AL C7 E-Government category. This category showcases innovations and breakthroughs done by thethat allow the government to provide better public services with the use of information and communication technology. JAKI, which is an application owned by the Jakarta Government, successfully selected as one of the nominations. 

Jakarta Kini (JAKI), Application for Various Needs, Indonesia

JAKI is a super-app owned by the Provincial Government of Jakarta. The JAKI platform is able to integrate various government-owned services for Jakarta residents. Today, JAKI already has 1,035,743 users in Jakarta. JAKI is widely used because it has various features in one application, one of which is a complaint channel in a form of JakLapor feature, which is connected to the Cepat Respon Masyarakat (CRM) system. The number of citizen reports in 2020 through JAKI reached 51,675 reports. This shows that JAKI makes it easy for citizens to connect with their government and its services quickly. This is what makes JAKI successful in being nominated for the E-Government category at the 2021 WSIS Prizes.

JAKI competes against 20 e-government projects from different parts of the world in the same category, nominated representatives from other countries , including:

Buenos Aires Urbanistic Code in 3D, Argentina

CUR 3D is the first interactive and three-dimensional map of the city of Buenos Aires that features a precise visualization of the buildable area, the maximum acceptable height and the construction surface. This project was launched in order to improve planning, design and management of public and private construction and to make real estate projects more effectively and efficiently.

COVID-19 vaccination Information System, Serbia

The project supports scheduling and tracking of vaccines and immunizations for the Serbian population. This web-based system is designed to ensure optimal coordination in the allocation, supply, distribution and administration of vaccines, such as the delivery of safe and effective vaccine doses to citizens who wish to receive them quickly, efficiently and reliably.

e-Court, Qatar 

E-Court is a paperless electronic case management developed by the Qatari government in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. This application covers court process management from filing cases to issuing decisions. This allows multiple parties to file cases, access cases, and communicate with the court.
