Just like meeting someone for the first time, we need to understand their characters so that we give each other a pleasant impression. That idea also applies when you decide to start cycling. Before taking your bike down the road, you have to examine the condition of your bicycle. Who knows that there are parts that need to be replaced or repaired first. To have a safe and exciting cycling experience, always make sure that every component of your bike works optimally.

Essential Equipments You Need to Prepare

Your safety is an absolute point that should always be on your top priority. Therefore, you should never brush aside the importance of wearing personal protective equipment such as helmets. Beside helmets, there are several other equipment that you need to prepare before cycling, such as bright-colored clothes, comfortable footwear, and a reflective vest if you are cycling when the sun is already set.

Cycling Etiquette

All roads in Jakarta belong to the citizens of Jakarta and we all have the equal rights in using it. That being said, the only right thing to do is to respect each other's rights as road users. As a bicycle user, you’re prohibited to break through the road carelessly, and as a vehicle user, never be a reason for someone to get injured. Here are some key points that you need to remember and do when cycling on the road:

  1. When using a permanent bicycle lane, keep a minimum distance of 1.5 meters from other vehicles.

  1. Always use the left lane when cycling. If you want to overtake another cyclist, do it from the right side. Give a signal first by ringing your bell.

  1. If you are cycling on a road with no bike lane, always use the side road. If you’re cycling with a friend, do it side by side and no more than two bicycles.

  1. When cycling at night, turn on your bicycle lights for safety.

  1. You’re required to use a hand signal before turning, stopping, or when letting others to overtake. It’s important to memorize these hand signals because it might come in handy!

  1. Cyclists are required to obey the traffic signs as it’s not limited to vehicle users only. So when you see the traffic light is showing a red light, you are obliged to stop.

  1. When parking your bicycle, make sure you remember where you parked your bike. You don’t want to cause a scene while finding your bike, right?

  1. Bring your bike lock and make sure your bike is perfectly locked when parked. If there is no dedicated bicycle parking, you can lock your bicycle to the nearest pole. Also, make sure you park in a safe place.

That’s a wrap! Are you interested in enjoying this bike lane in Jakarta? If that rings true, remember to always be focused and be careful all the time when cycling. Respect each other’s rights because we all deserve to feel comfortable when doing our activities in Jakarta!
