Bangkok and Berlin Delegations Visit to Jakarta

The Berlin Senate Department for Economy, Energy and Public Enterprises along with the Bangkok government made a Peer to Peer Exchange visit to the Jakarta Provincial Government on August 29-September 2, 2022, after the Communication, Information and Statistics Office of Jakarta Province through Jakarta Smart City and Bangkok government visited Berlin on 7th-10th June. This visit is part of the agenda of the EuropeAid project “Smart Change - Strengthening Urban Governance, Prosperity and Innovation in Jakarta, which is funded by the European Union and aims to promote good governance and sustainable urban development between Jakarta-Berlin in trilateral cooperation with Bangkok.

The exchange of visits between the three countries aims to initiate cross-sectoral and multidisciplinary international exchanges between decision makers and practitioners in the field of smart cities between Jakarta, Berlin and Bangkok. In process creating opportunities for new collaborations and cross-city projects, as well as strengthening the feasibility of the Smart Change project. The visit was attended by six representatives of Berlin, eight representatives of Smart Change, and nine representatives of Bangkok.

Day One: Visiting Various Local Cultural Programs

On the first day, the delegation was invited to get to know the history and culture of Jakarta. The first agenda of the day was the JXB City Tour: Jakarta Heritage, which is a bus city-tour carried out from 09.00 a.m to 10.30 a.m. Along the tour, the delegation was explained about the history of Jakarta, its development from time to time, and its plans for the future.

Then, at 11.00 a.m to 12.15 p.m, the welcoming of the delegates began. The reception was held at the Museum of Art and Ceramics. On this occasion, Andhika Permata as the Head of the Tourism and Creative Economy Office gave an opening speech. Novita Dewi, CEO of the Jakarta Experience Board also introduced Jakarta to the delegates, explaining the collaboration with Berlin and Bangkok, the final destination of the visit, and the Smart Change project.
 

In the afternoon, around 02.00 p.m to 3.30 p.m, the delegation visited the Kampung Aquarium. This place is one of the flats whose construction was done by the community action plan. During the visit, the delegation had the opportunity to talk and discuss directly with local communities and the architect of the social institution. Ana-Maria Trăsnea as the State of Berlin Delegate to the Federation and Permanent Secretary for Active Citizenship, Democracy Support and International Relations who became the U20 Berlin delegation also participated in the visit to the Kampung Aquarium. Day Two: Participating in Urban20

The delegation's agenda on the second day focused on the U2 (Urban20) event with the theme Digital Governance in Accelerating Sustainable Development and Climate Reciliency. Held at the Fairmont Hotel from 09.00 a.m to 12.00 a.m, this event is an outreach group meeting that aims to discuss urban issues which become the main agenda of the G20. Delegates can take part in exploring and sharing their perspectives as well as experiences regarding inclusiveness efforts on Digital Governance forums. The commitments and messages conveyed at the U20 forum will be continued to the G20 presidency and heads of state. The opening of the U20 Mayors Summit was held around 01.30 p.m to 02.30 p.m.

After the agenda was finished, at 02.30 p.m until 04.30 p.m, the delegates were invited to attend the plenary session. Here, they can get information on the actions that governments will take to tackle global climate change and support sustainable development. The agenda for the second day was then closed with a dinner which took place at the DKI Jakarta City Hall at 07.30 p.m to 09.30 p.m.

Day Three: Visiting Jakarta Smart City Office

After focusing on the Urban20 event on the previous day, starting from the third day, delegates were able to see firsthand the implementation of smart cities in Jakarta, and even visit the place where ideas about smart cities were born, the Jakarta Smart City (JSC) office. From 09.30 a.m to 11.30 a.m, the delegation visited the Jakarta Smart City office. During this occasion, the delegation could get to know more about Jakarta Smart City, JAKI as a super-app for Jakarta residents, and its trilateral cooperation with Berlin and Bangkok to implement a smart city ecosystem. In addition to listening to presentations on JSC, delegates also participated in focus group discussions (FGD) which aimed to connect ideas and discuss sustainable collaboration.

After visiting the Jakarta Smart City office, the delegation was also invited to visit the Jakarta Future City Hub, a hub that acts as a collaboration space and living lab that brings together problem owners and problem solvers in tackling city challenges. This visit took place from 01.30 p.m to 03.30 p.m at the Jakarta Box Tower. Delegates can walk around and see the facilities available at the Jakarta Future City Hub, guided by Surya Darmadi as Entrepreneurship Expert Smart Change Project, Alecia Firnanda as Event and Content Manager Smart Change Project Hub, and Doni Marmer who is the Accelerator Project Manager from Future City Hub.
 

Day Four: Exploring Jakarta's Smart Mobility

The fourth day's visit focused on the smart mobility concept that has been implemented by Jakarta. Thus, the delegation visited the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) area and the MRT Jakarta command center. Delegates can experience using public transportation in Jakarta as well as gain insight into the challenges and solutions of integrating public transportation in Jakarta. This tour starts from CSW Kebayoran Baru and ends at the Lebak Bulus MRT station from 09.30 a.m 12.00 p.m.

In the afternoon, a Deep Dive - Mobility in Jakarta was held at the Lebak Bulus MRT station from 02.00 p.m to 04.00 p.m. In this activity, all stakeholders who are experts in the field of transportation are invited to discuss mobility in Jakarta and future planning in a panel discussion. This is where delegates from the three cities can share their best practices and discuss which one is the best solution for different aspects of the city. On this day, the delegates had the opportunity to try almost all modes of transportation in Jakarta, from Transjakarta, MRT, to air-conditioned Mikrotrans that took them around.

Day Five: Exploring Jakarta's Smart Investment

The last day of the visit was themed on smart investment. The first activity was a visit to the MRT Jakarta office at Wisma Nusantara which took place from 10.00 a.m to 12.00 p.m. The delegates had the opportunity to have a discussion about investment in MRT Jakarta which has a positive impact on sustainable city development. This session highlighted the collaboration of city initiatives, investments, and resources.

Then, the activity continued with the participation of delegates in the Jakarta Investment Forum, an annual international forum that promotes and showcases business opportunities in Jakarta. This forum was held from 05.00 p.m to 08.00 p.m. Topics of discussion include investment procedures and opportunities and exploring cooperation with the Jakarta public sector. The presentation was made by Eda Özbay from Foreign Trade, Berlin Senate Department of Economy, Energy and Public Enterprises.

The last activity was a farewell dinner for the delegates which was held at the Orient Hotel. This moment marks the end of a series of events that have lasted for five days. The Jakarta Provincial Government also expressed its gratitude for the willingness of the Berlin and Bangkok governments to visit and participate in accelerating sustainable city development.

That concludes the Peer to Peer Exchange activities of the Berlin and Bangkok governments in Jakarta.
