At JSCLab Sharing #7 on July 28, 2023, Septi Riyani Maulida (SEO Manager IDN Times) presented the theme "Unlock the SEO Strategies to Skyrocket Website Visibility". During the event, all participants learned how SEO (Search Engine Optimization) can make content, such as articles, reach a wide audience.

Understanding SEO

SEO is the process of optimizing content to rank higher in search engine results, such as Google. It is done organically, so you do not  need to pay for it.

Septi gave an example, "Imagine you're feeling down or maybe crying because of a breakup. You search on Google, 'how to stop feeling down'. Then, at the top, the most relevant article for us appears." That is the result of SEO. Your writing process should involve incorporating relevant keywords into the content.

Make Your Content Skyrocket with SEO

Septi said that good content is one that can be read by both search engines and humans. To create good content, you need to consider the following seven elements:

  1. URL optimization. When creating content on your website, pay attention to the URL. Avoid using characters like symbols or dates. "The simpler the URL, the better is. That kind of URL is understood by humans and Google [search engine]," said Septi. She also shared tips for creating good URLs:

  • Avoid using dates or symbols
  • Include target keywords
  • Use only lowercase letters

By doing so, your content will perform well in search engines. If you look at the image below, the URL on the right is an example of a good one.

  1. Meta title optimization. Meta title is the content title that appears in search engine results. Septi described a good meta title as follows: 

  • Contains keywords
  • Consists of a maximum of 70 characters to avoid being truncated
  • Must be relevant and enticing.

  1. Meta description optimization. The meta description is located below the meta title, containing a summary of the content. These are the characteristics of a good meta description, based on Septi:

  • Contains the keyword, in the beginning of the sentence
  • Full of up to 160 characters, so it does not cut in the display
  • Relevant and captivating

  1. Heading and subheading optimization. Clear titles and subheadings will make it easier for the audience and search engines to read. That is why you need to write titles and subheadings that represent the paragraph content. This can also help you determine the structure of the content.

  1. Image optimization. You need to include images to clarify your article and make it more appealing. However, the images you insert must also be optimized. Here's how: 

  • Keep the image size small without compromising its quality.
  • Include keywords in the image file names. For example, name the image jakarta-smart-city.jpg if you want to insert an image of Jakarta Smart City.
  • Write image descriptions (alt text).

  1. Video optimization. Videos can increase engagement and audience session duration on your website. Remember to pay attention to these aspects: 

  • Include videos that are relevant to the article.
  • Avoid using autoplay for videos to prevent disturbing the audience.
  • If your website cannot host videos directly, embed YouTube links or other video websites within the content.

  1. Internal linking. Include internal links within your website. This will allow search engines and audiences to navigate your content easily.

Benefits of SEO

While paid search results might provide instant visibility, SEO is still powerful. It does not require high costs and offers the following advantages:

  1. Free traffic. SEO techniques generate organic and diverse traffic, not limited to specific target audiences like paid content. Anyone, regardless of gender, age, or location, can click and visit your website.

  1. Brand visibility. Useful and well-optimized content attracts more audiences through search engines, increasing your brand or website's visibility.

  1. Long-term strategy. SEO works today, tomorrow, and in the future. That is why you have to continuously optimize your content.
