If you are traveling by train from Bogor, Bekasi, to Kota, Sudirman, or to the airport, you will definitely stop at this station. Yep, it's Manggarai Station! As part of smart mobility, Manggarai Station area is also included in one of the stations that are revitalized by the Government of Jakarta and integrated with other modes of transportation, including Transjakarta buses. Now let’s take a peek at the new look of Manggarai Station.

New Lines, New Connections

Behind its grandeur, there is actually a long history of Manggarai Station. The station was built in 1914 and designed by Dutch architect J. Van Gendt. It used to serve routes such as Jakarta-Rangkasbitung, Jakarta-Bekasi, as well as to several other areas. The Manggarai Station was once managed by the state railway company Staatsspoorwegen. During the independence period, this station became a site for founding fathers to meet during their plan to temporarily transfer the nation capital from Jakarta to Yogyakarta. Then, in 1993, Manggarai Station was established by the Jakarta Provincial Government as a Cultural Heritage Station Building.

Today, Manggarai Station is one of the busiest stations in Greater Jakarta. Therefore, the government decided to do a revitalization in this station area, including the addition of new overhead lines on the west side of the station. The new line was already operating since September 2021.

The construction of the new line aims to speed up train services that are often halted before entering Manggarai Station. The four new platforms on line 10-13 are to serve the Jakarta Kota-Bogor route and vice versa.

Meanwhile, line 1-7 operates to serve other routes such as Cikarang-Bekasi and Bogor to Angke/Jatinegara. However, line 4 and 5 were closed in preparation for the construction of the station on the east side.

To access the second floor platforms, train passengers can walk to platform 6 and 7 or from Manggarai Transjakarta Bus Stop. After that, the passengers will have access to use elevators, escalators, and also stairs to reach the second floor platforms.

In this station area there is also a train to Soekarno Hatta Airport with its waiting room on the ground floor. The train itself runs on line 8. So, for people who want to travel to the airport, you can take advantage of this station facility.

A Future Integrated Area

In addition to the construction on the west side of the station, other parts of the station are also revitalized, such as the development of an integrated area with other modes of transportation, such as motorcycle taxis, Transjakarta buses, and others. Meanwhile, the Transjakarta bus stop and several wayfindings have also been installed. This area is still work in progress and is targeted for completion by the end of 2021.

The new layout of this station area will certainly make it easier for you to use public transport. Apart from Tebet and Manggarai Station, there are still other stations that have been revitalized or under revitalization, such as Palmerah Station, Gondangdia Station, and Jakarta Kota Station. The transformation of Manggarai Station and its surrounding is one manifestation of smart mobility that makes it easier for people to mobilize using integrated transportation modes, so that you can ride trains, buses, or other transportation more comfortably and seamlessly.
