Amid our battle against the Covid-19 pandemic for the past two years, we tend to forget an existing global issue that has been going on for decades, the climate crisis. This climate crisis is caused by human activities. Therefore, each of us is responsible for mitigating the climate crisis, one of which is by reducing emissions resulting from daily activities. Emissions are in the form of greenhouse gases and pollutants. Besides being able to cause a climate crisis, excessive emissions and pollutants will reduce air quality, potentially causing droughts, floods, extreme weather, health problems, and so on.

To make it easier for the Jakartans to measure their daily emissions, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government and WRI Indonesia, known as the World Resources Institute Foundation, collaborated to develop the JakEmisi feature in JAKI. ‘Emisi’ is the Indonesian word for emission. This article will show you more about JakEmisi and guide you regarding what to do after calculating your emissions.

How to Use JakEmisi

In the JakEmisi feature, you can calculate daily carbon emissions resulting from various emission sources in your activities, namely electronic equipment, buying clothes, food, or garbage disposal. Here's how to use it.

  1. Open the JAKI app.
  2. Click Lainnya on the features menu on the JAKI main page.

  1. Choose JakEmisi.

  1. Select the emission source you want to calculate. Each source will have different instructions. Follow the directions according to the emission source.

  1. For electronic devices, select Peralatan Elektronik. You can calculate the emission of more than one electronic device at a time.

  1. Enter the number of units and the duration of use of the equipment per day. Click Selanjutnya.

  1. Enter the number of days (in 1 week) you use the equipment. Click Lihat Hasil.

  1. The number of emissions you generate will appear immediately.

The calculation results that you will get at JakEmisi are in the form of total equipment usage for 3 months, CO2 emissions from using equipment for 3 months, NOx emissions from using electronic equipment for 3 months, and SO2 emissions from using electronic equipment for 3 months.

What You Can Do After Calculate Emissions

Perhaps you are wondering, what should be done after knowing the total carbon emissions you produced? There are two steps that need to be done after going through the Calculate step, which are Reduce and Absorb. For the first part, we need to reduce our carbon emissions, which you can apply in three ways; Avoid, Shift, and Improve. With Avoid, imagine that you want to go shopping, you decide to shop online because you don't need to travel and emit emissions from your vehicle.  Shift can be done by switching from private vehicles to sustainable alternatives such as public transportation. Finally, Improve,  is where you use private vehicles with environmentally friendly fuels, electric power, and other renewable technological innovations. After reducing carbon production, you can also continue with absorbing emissions. One of the ways to absorb emissions is by planting trees in various reforestation areas. It is because trees can absorb carbon dioxide (emissions) and produce oxygen in the atmosphere.

That's all about JakEmisi, JAKI's newest feature, along with the brief introduction of how you can take part in reducing emission production. Calculating your daily carbon emissions may be a new thing for some of you. However, this needs to be accustomed to protect the future of our earth so that it can be a good home for the future generation to live in. JAKI has made it easier for you to help that cause with JakEmisi. Haven’t had JAKI on your phone yet? No worries, all you have to do is download the app on the Google Play Storeor Apple App Store. Free! Let’s make use of this feature and don't forget to reduce and absorb. Hopefully this article can be a useful source of information for you.
