Jakarta Innovation Days Expo 2024: Synergy for a Sustainable Future of Jakarta

The Jakarta Innovation Days Expo 2024 (JID Expo 2024) was successfully held from October 1 to 4 at Balai Sudirman, showcasing leading innovations that support Jakarta's transformation into a sustainable global city. The event carried the theme "Imagining 20 Years of Jakarta," focusing on developing creative solutions to address urban challenges over the next two decades.

The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government initiated JID Expo 2024 through the Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda), which is committed to promoting innovation. Let’s take a look at the summary of the event below.

Event Series Leading to Jakarta Innovation Days Expo 2024

The journey to JID Expo 2024 began with exciting pre-event activities, namely the Jakarta Innovation Awards 2024 held on July 23, 24, 25, and 29, 2024. This event was followed by a discussion on Research & Innovation Mainstreaming and Building Research Ecosystem in Public Policy Making in Jakarta on August 26, 2024, as well as the University & Startup Ecosystem Discussion on August 27, 2024, and the BUMD and Startup Ecosystem Discussion on September 20, 2024. These activities were the initial steps to foster dialogue and collaboration among various stakeholders. Subsequently, the main event, the Jakarta Innovation Days Expo 2024, was held from October 1 to 4 at Balai Sudirman.

Series of Events for Jakarta Innovation Days Expo 2024

The main event of the Jakarta Innovation Days Expo 2024 was opened with a speech by the Assistant for Governance (Asisten Pemerintahan) of the Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta, Sigit Wijatmoko. The Assistant to the Government (Asistem Pemerintahan) of the Secretary of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government, Sigit Wijatmoko, opened the Jakarta Innovation Days Expo 2024. In his speech, he stated, “Jakarta faces various challenges such as traffic congestion, flooding, and air pollution.” He emphasized the importance of a long-term vision to make Jakarta an advanced, equitable, competitive, and sustainable global city. JID is a platform for the government, business actors, academics, and the community to introduce innovations supporting the city's development. 

Previously, on a separate occasion, the Acting Governor of DKI Jakarta, Heru Budi Hartono, shared his views on the importance of innovation in creating a smarter and more sustainable city. In his remarks, he emphasized that innovation is the key pillar in realizing the vision of Jakarta 2045.

"Inovasi is the driving force to realize the Jakarta 2045 Vision. We need innovation in all sectors, from transparent and efficient governance to smart and sustainable transportation," said Acting Governor Heru.

He also invited all elements of society, including government, academics, entrepreneurs, and communities, to actively promote innovation for Jakarta's better future.

Innovation Exhibition: A Platform for Idea and Technology Exploration

One of the main attractions of JID Expo 2024 was the Innovation Exhibition featuring 52 exhibitors from various sectors. This exhibition served as a platform to introduce various innovative projects initiated by the government, private sector, academics, startups, and communities, as well as an opportunity to showcase ideas and seek collaboration with various parties.


Several highlighted sectors included governance, transportation, technology, environment, and social welfare. The innovations showcased included smart solutions for waste management, eco-friendly transportation technologies, and digital initiatives for more transparent and inclusive governance.

Jakarta Smart City Booth: Presenting Digital Innovations for Citizens

Jakarta Smart City, as a Public Service Agency (BLUD) under the DKI Jakarta Communication, Information, and Statistics Office, also participated in the presence of the JSC booth at the Jakarta Innovation Days 2024 exhibition. This booth was designed as an interactive space allowing visitors to directly explore the digital innovations implemented in Jakarta. Visitors could explore various digital products developed by JSC through monitor screens.

Jakarta Innovation Days 2024 Towards a Global City


The JSC booth was also equipped with various infographic posters providing in-depth insights into the synergistic digital ecosystem of Jakarta Smart City, JSC products such as the Community Response Platform (CRM), which facilitates citizen reporting, as well as Jakarta's vision towards a Global City by 2045. Here, visitors could understand how this technology contributes to building a smarter city that is responsive to the needs of its citizens.

Jakarta Innovation Days 2024 Towards a Global City


Additionally, visitors were treated to exclusive merchandise as souvenirs from Jakarta Smart City. The booth also provided an excellent space for direct discussions with the JSC team regarding the role of technology in supporting Jakarta's transformation into a global city, as well as how to access JSC's digital innovations, such as reporting issues, monitoring floods, and more to ease citizens' lives.

Panel Discussions: Discussing Solutions for Future Urban Challenges

JID Expo 2024 also featured 10 in-depth panel discussion sessions, inviting innovators, academics, professionals, and government representatives. These discussions covered various topics supporting Jakarta's vision as a global city, including urban governance, environmental innovation, sustainable economy, and strengthening human and technological capacity.

Several discussion topics that captured the participants' attention are as follows:

  • Digital Innovation for Government Management: Exploring how digital technology can enhance government efficiency and public participation.
  • Sustainable Economy: Discussing strategies to create a sustainable and inclusive economic model in Jakarta.
  • Environmentally Friendly Solutions for Transportation: Addressing initiatives to develop more eco-friendly transportation, supporting carbon emission reduction.
  • Collaboration Between Government, Citizens, and Stakeholders: Emphasizing the importance of cooperation between the government, citizens, and other stakeholders to create effective solutions for the challenges Jakarta faces today and in the future.

Innovation Matchmaking: Collaboration for Sustainable Innovation

JID Expo 2024 also consisted of an Innovation Matchmaking session. This session was designed to unite innovators from diverse backgrounds to foster cross-sector collaboration. The aim was to facilitate synergy among stakeholders, including government, private sector, and communities, thereby creating innovative and far-reaching partnerships. Participants came from various fields, including representatives from ASEAN cities, Sister Cities of Jakarta, BUMD, academics, startups, NGOs, and central government.

The event was reinforced by the JID Expo 2024 Declaration, symbolizing a shared commitment to develop the research and innovation ecosystem in Jakarta continually. This declaration is expected to strengthen inter-sector collaboration and accelerate the adoption of innovations in various urban development areas.

Explore Jakarta: Exploring Public Space Innovation Projects

As part of the Jakarta Innovation Days Expo 2024 event series, participants were invited to join a session called Explore Jakarta, which focused on visits to two significant public space development projects, namely Tebet Eco Park and the Ismail Marzuki Park Area (TIM). This activity provided participants with direct insights into how innovation in public space planning can create greener, more inclusive, and community-friendly urban environments.


These two projects exemplify Jakarta's commitment to creating public spaces that are not only aesthetic but also functional and support healthy social interactions among residents. Tebet Eco Park, focusing on greening and nature conservation in the city, and the Ismail Marzuki Park Area, which integrates art and culture, demonstrate that innovation is not limited to technology but also encompasses sustainable urban planning.

JID Expo 2024 successfully brought together innovators from various sectors to drive tangible innovations for Jakarta's development collectively.
