“15 groups that have enjoyed Transjakarta for free, starting today can also enjoy MRT and LRT Jakarta for free. Inshallah, this convenience can encourage the use of public transportation for Jakarta residents,” the Governor of Jakarta officially announced. This is a concrete step toward encouraging the use of public transport that is more inclusive, efficient, and environmentally friendly. So, who is eligible to enjoy Jakarta’s free public transportation service? Let’s break it down in this article!

How to Access Free Public Transportation Services

This free public transportation program is targeted at communities in need of mobility support. The available transportation modes include Transjakarta, MRT Jakarta, and LRT Jakarta.

To facilitate this access, the Jakarta Provincial Government provides two types of cards: JakCard Combo and TJ Card, each with different coverage. Let’s explore them one by one.

JakCard Combo

The JakCard Combo grants free access to three transportation modes at once: MRT Jakarta, LRT Jakarta  (not including Jabodebek LRT), and Transjakarta (including Metrotrans, Minitrans, and Mikrotrans). To enjoy this service, all eligible groups must first activate  their service card. If you are interested, feel free to visit the nearest Bank DKI branch. Here are the eligible groups for the JakCard Combo:

TJ Card

The TJ Card, a type of Kartu Layanan Gratis (free service card), provides free access exclusively to Transjakarta services, including regular buses, Metrotrans, and Mikrotrans. Support Smart Mobility in Jakarta!

Once your card is activated, you can tap in at any station or stop without needing to top up your balance. This expansion of free public transportation by the Jakarta Government is part of its smart mobility vision, a concept of integrated, efficient urban mobility.

Thanks to the integration  of various modes of transportation through the JakLingko  system, smart citizens can now enjoy more convenient and cost-effective travel.

These acts align with the Jakarta Provincial Government’s efforts to reduce the use of private vehicles in the capital. One such initiative is a policy requiring government employees, including civil servants, to use public transportation every Wednesday. This regulation is outlined in Instruksi Gubernur Nomor 6 Tahun 2025(governor’s instruction). As more residents shift to public transport, air quality is expected to improve and traffic congestion to decrease.

JAKI, Jakarta’s official super app, also supports your mobility. Within the app, the Public Transport feature allows you to check routes and schedules for all public transit. The Maps feature helps you locate the nearest stations or stops, while the News feature keeps you updated on the latest information about all public transport in Jakarta. You can downloadand use it on your device for free. Let’s build a smarter, greener, and better-connected Jakarta together! Need more updates on Jakarta? Follow @jsclab!
