The air we breathe every day is composed of 21% oxygen, with the rest being nitrogen. Smartcitizens, did you know that? Now, imagine what would happen if pure oxygen or 100% medical-grade oxygen were used in a high-pressure room. This is what iss known as a hyperbaric therapy facility. Thanks to this therapy, health issues faced by fishermen and divers can be effectively treated. Curious about how it works? Let’s dive into it in this article!

What is a Hyperbaric Facility?

A hyperbaric facility is a high-pressure air chamber used for pure oxygen therapy. The pressure inside is greater than one atmosphere. This therapy is known as hyperbaric therapy or Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT). During the process, patients inhale 100% oxygen (medical-grade oxygen) inside the high-pressure room, which enhances oxygen absorption by the lungs. This condition aids the healing process of various medical conditions by increasing oxygenation to tissues experiencing ischemia or hypoxia, reducing edema, accelerating neovascularization, and providing bacteriostatic effects.

RSUD Kepulauan Seribu is the only rumah sakit umum daerah/RSUD (regional public hospital) in Jakarta that has a hyperbaric facility. RSUD Kepulauan Seribu is the only regional general hospital (RSUD) that has a hyperbaric facility in the Jakarta area. This facility is supported by dr. Soeprihadi Soedjono, Sp.KL. Sub, Sp.PH as Dokter Spesialis Kedokteran Kelautan serta Konsultan Penyelaman dan Hiperbarik (marine medicine specialist and diving and hyperbaric consultant) at RSUD Kepulauan Seribu. Having qualified specifications, the hyperbaric facility provides oxygen therapy effectively and safely. Manufactured by Hypertec in the United States in 2006, the hyperbaric chamber is a Multiplace Deck Decompression Chamber (DDC) with a horizontal cylindrical design that can accommodate up to four people at once. During hyperbaric therapy/HBOT, patients are exposed to pressures of about 2.4–2.8 Atmospheres Absolute (ATA), equivalent to diving at a depth of 50–60 feet sea water (fsw). This allows pure oxygen to be optimally absorbed by the body.

Medical Conditions Treated with Hyperbaric Therapy

People who work as fishermen, divers, or engage in activities at sea and underwater can benefit from hyperbaric facilities/HBOT. In addition to treating diving-related illnesses (Diving Medicine), HBOT is also used for clinical cases (Hyperbaric Medicine). More specifically, the medical conditions that can be treated with hyperbaric therapy include:

  1. Diving Medicine:

  • Decompression Sickness: Caused by nitrogen gas bubbles blocking blood vessels, HBOT helps supply oxygen and compresses nitrogen trapped in the body.
  • Osteonecrosis Disbaric: Bone damage resulting from untreated decompression sickness.
  • Near Drowning: Aids respiratory recovery.

  1. Hyperbaric Medicine:

  • Burns: Increases oxygen supply to damaged tissues, accelerating healing.
  • Diabetes and Diabetic Foot Ulcers: Lowers blood sugar levels and kills anaerobic bacteria causing infections.
  • Neurological Disorders: Assists in stroke recovery, traumatic brain injury healing, and Alzheimer’s disease management.
  • Osteoarthritis: Reduces inflammation and accelerates joint and muscle injury recovery.
  • Circulatory Disorders: Improves blood flow to areas affected by circulation problems.
  • Cancer: Serves as an adjunct therapy for certain types of cancer.
  • Skin Rejuvenation: Boosts collagen production for skin elasticity and anti-aging.
  • Sudden Deafness: Assists in hearing recovery and alleviates related symptoms such as tinnitus and vertigo.
