The Eid holidays are over. We are now reigniting our passion in exploring the wilds of Jakarta. Some people are exercising, going to work, or merely taking a walk. We all know being outside and feeling the warmth of the sunlight can boost our energy levels. However, before going out, Smartcitizens need to be aware of the air quality in Jakarta. Is it even possible? Yes, definitely!

The Air Quality feature on JAKI  gives information about Air Quality Index/AQI. So, you are able to find out the air quality in Jakarta. What is the way to do it? Let us find out below!

How to Check the Air Quality in Jakarta Using JAKI

These are a few steps to use the Air Quality feature on JAKI. Open JAKI and click Air Quality on the Home page.

After successfully choosing the Air Quality feature, you are able to see the index values of air quality in Jakarta regencies. These index values come from the sensor points in Bundaran HI, Central Jakarta; Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta; Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta; Lubang Buaya, East Jakarta; and Jagakarsa, South Jakarta.

Air Quality Parameters

You are also able to see the parameters of air quality using Air Quality. By being aware of the air quality, Smartcitizens are able to understand the levels of mixture of colourless and odourless gases, whether good or bad. This mixture is actually what we inhale when we breathe. The air quality is adjusted based on AQI (Air Quality Index), referring to pollutants in the air in certain areas. These are the air quality parameters:

  1. 0–50: Good. The air quality is not risky for every living organism, building, and aesthetic value.
  2. 51–100: Moderate. The air quality is not risky for humans and animals, but it has potential to risk sensitive plants and aesthetic values.
  3. 101–200: Unhealthy. The air quality is risky for humans and sensitive animals and ruins plants also aesthetic values.
  4. 201–300: Very Unhealthy. The air quality has potential to be harmful for the entire population in an area.
  5. Over 300: Hazardous. The air quality causes serious damage to the health of the entire population.

In addition, it also appears the kinds of air pollutants, namely PM10 (particulate matter with the diameter of 10 microns or less), SO2 (sulphur dioxide), CO (carbon monoxide), O(ozone), NO(nitrogen oxide), dan PM2,5 (particulate matter with the diameter of 2,5 microns or less). These kinds of air pollutants definitely cause damage to the population.

  1. PM (particulate matter): has the components of sulphates, mineral dust, and water that have the potential to risk  health.
  2. SO2 (sulphur dioxide): colourless gas that has a sharp odour, produced from the burning of fossil fuels and the smelting of mineral ores.
  3. CO (carbon monoxide): colourless, odourless, and tasteless toxic gas. Humans will pass out or die  by inhaling the high levels of CO.
  4. O (ozone): at the ground level and is formed from the reaction of gas, exposed to the sunlight.
  5. NO (nitrogen oxide): gas from the burning of fuels that has the potential to cause respiratory diseases.

For instance, on 7 December 2023 at 09:00, it appeared that the air quality in Central Jakarta or Jakarta Pusat was Moderate with the value of 68.

Maintain the Air Quality Altogether

Frequently checking the air quality actually gives benefits for all of us. To give an example, before exercising, it is better for you to pay attention to the air quality at the moment. Not only does it boost our mood, good air quality also reduces  chronic or acute respiratory disease burden. So, do not be careless!

Who would have thought that every one of us is capable of maintaining the air quality in Jakarta? With no doubt, it is very possible! More or less, here is the list that you can do:

  • Use public transportation. This way, Smartcitizens can take part to reduce NO2 that comes out from motor vehicles. To see the schedules of MRTJ, LRT Jakarta, TransJakarta, and Mikrotrans, go use the JakLingko feature on JAKI!
  • For motor vehicle owners, never forget to check your vehicle’s emission condition! By doing so, you are able to see whether or not the emission level is appropriate. Go use the Emission Test feature on JAKI for this matter.
  • Touch some grass! If possible, you should just take a walk for a while. It will help us burn our body calories!

Those are the steps to check the air quality in Jakarta. Come download JAKI on Google Playor AppStore, so you are able to use the Air Quality feature!
