The Fun of Joining Data Science Trainee
The future of Jakarta lies in the hands of the next generation. Educated talents are given the opportunity by Jakarta Smart City to channel their knowledge. Through the Data Science Trainee program, data scientist talents are trained and gain experience to improve Jakarta. Want to know more about the excitement? Read below
Data Science Trainee: Experience to Improve Jakarta
Data Science Trainee is one of the training programs from Jakarta Smart City, started in 2021. Within a year, this program has two to three batches. Through this program, talents have the opportunity to seek solutions to city problems.
Data Science Trainee can be a way to sharpen and test the data science skills one possesses. By participating in this program, participants directly solve real problems with a data science approach. There are several topics that can be discussed by each batch. Here is a list of the activities:
- understanding smart city problems/context;
- mentorship on:
- machine learning,
- statistics,
- dashboards (Tableau, ArcGIS, and GDS),
- paper writing,
- Jakarta Smart City concept,
- clustering,
- Prediction,
- traffic congestion using Waze data,
- air quality,
- Flooding,
- waste management,
- Covid-19 and economic impact,
- CRM (Cepat Respon Masyarakat, and
- CCTV;
- capstone project addressing Jakarta's existing problems;
- Data Science Trainee Q&A sessions;
- sharing sessions among participants (mentees);
- daily or stand-up meetings;
- visits to Jakarta Smart City at Balai Kota DKI Jakarta (Jakarta City Hall); and
- final presentation of capstone project results to stakeholders.
Impressions from Data Science Trainee Participants
Data Science Trainee participants are graduates from bachelor's or diploma programs. So far, Jakarta Smart City has provided training to seven batches.
Muhammad Bondan Vitto Ramadhan, or Bondan from ITS (Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember), was part of Data Science Trainee Batch 7. He gained experience in running an image classification project and computer vision. Here, he presented a research titled Blurring Faces and Number Plates Using JakLapor Data in JAKI App. The research aimed to develop a model that automatically detects license plates and faces entering JAKI and blurs them.

For Bondan, the Data Science Trainee program left a positive impression. He enjoyed the experience of working with data and researching on preferred case studies. He also appreciated the opportunity to discuss with mentors. “For me, it's a 'full package' experience!” he said.
Another participant is Gina Washington, a graduate of International Relations from the London School of Economics in 2022. As part of Data Science Trainee Batch 7, she researched which economic sectors were competitive and promising. Additionally, she explored how the Jakarta Provincial Government could further invest in developing these sectors.

Gina appreciated the curriculum provided in the Data Science Trainee program: lectures and seminars. “From these lectures, we were taught various topics about data science,” she revealed.
Supporting Jakarta through Data Science Trainee
If a city advances in the global economic arena and is competitive, it is considered a global city. Jakarta will continue its role as the center for economics, business, cultural melting pot, and technological development. Through Data Science Trainee, Jakarta Smart City aims to prepare data scientists to apply their knowledge. Together, we can all learn and collaborate to make Jakarta become competitive on a global scale.
