Air pollution poses a significant challenge in major cities like Jakarta. Alarming statistics from the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) reveal that approximately 6.5 million individuals lose their lives annually due to poor air quality. Moreover, the Asia Pacific region, including Indonesia, accounts for 70% of Acute Respiratory Tract Infection (ARI) deaths caused by air pollution.

Among the leading causes of air pollution in Jakarta is the emission from motor vehicles, contributing a staggering 70%. This pollution takes the form of Nitrogen Oxide (NOx), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Sulfur Dioxide (SO2), and Particulate Matter (PM). To address this issue, the Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta is actively working on enhancing public transportation networks, encouraging people to transition from private vehicles to public transportation. Additionally, they are promoting emission tests for both two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles, along with implementing corresponding penalties.

Are you curious about emission tests and how to register for them? Let’s explore the details in this article.

What is an Emission Test?

An emission test is a test of engine performance and motor vehicle pollution. This is to determine the efficiency of combustion in the vehicle engine and reduce air pollution caused by motor vehicle exhaust gases.

Benefits

Manfaat Uji Emisi

An emission test not only provides benefits to motorized vehicles, but also to the environment. Through the emission test results, it will be known the level of exhaust from engine combustion which will affect the environment. If your vehicle’s engine exhaust levels exceed the maximum limit, it means that the vehicle is not in optimal condition. In this case, the emission test is also useful to determine the health of the vehicle engine. If your vehicle is detected as such, then you can make appropriate efforts to repair and maintain it.

Grand Emission Test 2023

Uji Emisi Akbar

DKI Jakarta Provincial Government through the Department of Environment (DLH) is committed to reducing air pollution caused by motorized vehicles. One of them is by holding a Grand Emission Test in support of World Environment Day on Monday, June 5, 2023 and welcoming Jakarta’s 496th Anniversary.

This grand emission test will be held in the DKI Jakarta area, namely Ragunan Wildlife Park, South Jakarta, as well as the capital’s buffer areas such as Bogor City, Bogor Regency, Depok City, Tangerang City, South Tangerang City, Tangerang Regency, Bekasi City, and Bekasi Regency.

Based on Governor Regulation №66/2020 on Motor Vehicle Exhaust Gas Emission Test, the main targets of the emission test are individual passenger cars and motorcycles operating on Jakarta roads.

If your vehicle does not pass the emission test or does not conduct an emission test, it will be subject to sanctions in the form of parking disincentives (application of the highest tariff) and the imposition of ticketing sanctions in accordance with Law Number 22 of 2009 concerning Road Traffic and Transportation.

Terms

In the emission testing process, several things are done, including:

  • By attaching a gas detector to the tailpipe.
  • The vehicle being tested must be in the on position
  • Do not turn on electronic devices in the vehicle such as air conditioning, lights, or radio
  • Performed for 5–7 minutes
  • The level and content of vehicle smoke substances will be recorded after completion
  • Substances detected include Carbon Monoxide, Hydrocarbons, Carbon Dioxide, Oxygen, and Nitrogen Oxide.
  • Vehicles that pass will be given proof of passing the emission test.
